One of three Kyoto famous water: Somei (or Some-no-i)

Japan is known as a country that can drink tap water unusually even in the world.
It is said that it is because suitable water for the beverage that the flow of the river-bed water is very fast because there is a vertical interval in the mountainous district and the plains part and the distance of the river valley is short, and the microorganism etc. are few is abundantly produced.
Especially, Hieizan is in northeast this Kyoto, there is Mt. Atago-yama in the northwest, and good quality well water can be obtained in all urban places.

Kyoto is the city with history in more than 1200 years, various industry has been supported in the change of the time by this water.
As for the Tofu (bean curd) of the Kyoto special product, water makes it make to delicious, as daily life water to say nothing of a necessary thing. Moreover, even the dyeing and weaving industry with the tradition must have clean water.
There was a well called "three Kyoto famous water" in well water/spring water with such a lot of Kyoto.

These have collected the people's beliefs all over Kyoto, and also have received favor of famous masters of tea ceremony.

Presently only Somei remains, and still now springs the clear water.
In this well which there is in the "Nashiki Jinja" shinto shrine which is adjacent in Kyoto Imperial Palace, we can see the scene that a lot of people in the inside and outside of Kyoto come to dip this well water as life water of every day.

京都三名水の1つ:染井(「そめい」又は「そめのい」)



日本は世界でも珍しく、水道水が飲める国として知られています。
山間部と平野部の高低差があり河川流域の距離が短いため伏流水の流れが非常に速く、微生物等が少ない飲料に適した水が豊富に産出されるためだと言われています。
特にこの京都は北東に比叡山、北西に愛宕山を従え、市街地のあらゆるところで良質の井戸水を得ることが出来ます。

京都は1200年以上の歴史を持つ都市ですが、その時代の変遷の中で様々な産業がこの水によって支えられてきました。
生活飲料は言うに及ばず、豆腐が京都名産である所以はこの水が起因するものと言えるでしょう。また伝統ある染織産業においても、清浄な水は無くてはならないものです。

そんな京都の数多くある井戸水/湧水の中でも、「京都三名水」と言われる井戸がありました。
・染井(そめい)
・醒ケ井(さめがい)
・県井(あがたい)
と呼ばれたこれらの井戸は京都中の人々の信仰を集め、また茶の湯においては、名だたる茶人達の寵愛を受けることとなります。

現在では唯一、染井のみが残り、今も滾々と水を湧き出しています。
京都御苑の東に隣接する「梨木神社」にあるこの井戸では、京都内外の多くの人たちが日々の生活水として水を汲みに来る光景を、今でも日常の風景として見ることが出来ます。
