No transportation without proper packaging. Goods are carefully wrapped and packed to make sure they arrive at destination in the same condition they started the journey.
As an executive of the packaging industry once said: "we produce 100% waste". While the public is often informed about the efforts to reduce emission and other transportation related pollution, little is publicized about the packaging industry's effort to produce more efficient and less polluting packaging.
The box in this illustration is not a particularly good example. It still uses Styrofoam. State of the art packaging materials are made of biodegradable corn starch, or of recyclable cardboard shaped to absorb the shocks and vibrations of transportation.
This box, like many others, has made it a long way. It contained a computer housing. Like many computer components nowadays it is made in China. It was shipped, probably in a container load by boat, to North America. Then it was dispatched to a warehouse on the Pacific Coast, from where Purolator Ground Services brought it to the other side of the continent. The whole computer was assembled in Quebec, and then shipped again to its final destination. I have personally shipped one of these to a friend in Japan, using Canada Post EMS air service.
