Sacramento is a nexus of California.

Centrally located, halfway between the coast and the mountains, in the middle of the Great Central Valley that runs north/south the length of the state, and at the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers, Sacramento has many lines passing through it. Freeway, Railroad, Communications, River, all pass through it going east/west from the mountains to the sea and north/south along the Central Valley.

This view is of one of several major Freeway exchanges in the Sacramento area. We're looking northward at an exchange near downtown Sacramento. Business Loop 80 aka "Capital City Freeway" coming in from the north turns into State Route 99 as it passes over us going south. Directly in front of us, passing left and right, is Freeway 50.
