The King Harry Ferry is one of the few chain link ferries in the world. This means the chains are fixed and run right across the river and the ferry drags itself along them picking them up from the river bed as it goes and dropping them behind so other boats can go past.

Putting your car on the ferry saves driving around the head of the river at Truro cutting off around 20 miles of your journey. It's a fun ride too.

The panorama is a bit shady this late in the afternoon but that gives a nice sky. I chose this panorama so you can see the chains as it pulls away rather than one from the middle of river. It is a beautiful crossing though. If you would like to see view from the ferry in the middle of the river I notice Ken McMahon has done his panorama on the ferry as well and his shows the middle of the river. See http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp906/html/KenMcMahon.html

The crossing has been running on chains since 1889 though this is actually a brand new ferry. It struck me as a bit quieter and less vibrating than the previous one. It is also blue instead of white and has a transparent side wall so the motorists can admire the view.
