Ratcliffe Moorings sits on a canalised stretch of the River Soar alongside one of the largest power stations in the Trent Valley. So as the late summer sun sets and electric lights are switched on, consumption of the energy being produced by nearby Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station increases.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar is coal-fired and located eight miles south-west of Nottingham. The main station consists of four units with a total generator registered capacity of 2000MW. All four units are equipped with wet limestone gypsum Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant. In addition there are two auxiliary gas turbine generators providing a further GRC of 34MW.

Atmospheric discharges from the main plant are from a single stack, 200m in height. The FGD plant is designed to remove at least 90% of the SO2 from atmospheric emissions. The FGD plant is also effective in reducing HCl and particulate emissions. NOx emissions are controlled by low-NOx burners.

Cooling water is extracted from and returned to the River Trent. Compliance with strict limits on all discharges to water is enforced, and there are various interceptor arrangements and water treatment plant to control discharge quality. Some 43 different species are routinely monitored before discharge.
