The energetic Pacific Ocean stirs up sand in waves at Sandy Beach on O‘ahu. Plenty of locals and tourists show up for bodysurfing, body-boarding, surfing, and just diving into the powerful waves. The island shelf plunges quickly here, and with no natural reef to protect the beach, the waves rise quick and tall.
Lifeguards make more rescues here than any other guarded beach in the state, and it carries the highest rate of broken backs and necks in the nation. Experienced locals make riding the waves look easy, first-timers see this and think they can do the same.
Comedian/singer Mel Cabang joked that the sand is slowly disappearing from Sandy Beach – about a pound at at time, in the bottom of every tourist's swimsuit.
