Until the 16th century the Dreisam was an untamed river with a wide bed and many meanders. Every high-water changed its shape. Then river-management began with the stabilization of the banks with wickerwork, later its course was straightened and today it is a completely regulated river with a rather narrow bed.

In May began the works on the renaturation of a section of the Dreisam, a stretch of about one kilometer where the river flows through the Kartaus meadows. Bank reinforcements will be removed or their slopes flattened and new areas of shallow water will be created. The many little weirs will be replaced by stone groynes, which will improve the currents and open the way for various wildlife.
