Coventry was one of the first, if not the first city to build a pedestrian-only shopping precinct. WWII laid waste the old town centre and a new, innovative precinct rose from the ruins in the late 1950s,

At the time it was a revolutionary space but after 4 decades it had become an outdated, windswept, decrepit, unfriendly environment. So, they rebuilt it, put a glass roof over to keep everyone dry & warm and some new shops arrived. In the process, they restored a lovely tile mural which maps Coventry's rich history and revamped the neon murals you can see on the walls; depicting Coventry's industries; including Clock & Watches, Transport, Aerospace, Textiles, Electronics & Bicycles

In October 2008 Lower Precinct will celerbrate its 50th birthday.
