Tono is known throughout Japan as the cradle of Tono Monogatari (Tales of Tono), written in 1910 by Yanagita Kunio, who gathered folk tales of the area. This book is now considered of the greatest works of Japanese folklore studies.

The Shishi Odori is a historic dance that appears in Tono Monogatari. It is said that it has a history of 400 years.
There are 14 organizations for the preservation of this historic dance in tono. The Hosogoe Shishi Odori Hozonkai is one of these.

One Shishi odori group is based on same local communities. It is composed from dancer, drummer and fifer. There are about 30 members, from 6 to 60 years old.

The dance and music is succeeded from generation to generation.

June 17 was a festival of the Hinode Shinto shrine. The dance was dedicated on this day.
