In this area along the river Zaan, a community of people literally lived off the wind.

They built hundreds of windmills, which were used to grind corn, saw wood, crush seeds and nuts (for oil), grind minerals (dyes for paint), and to pump the polder to keep their feet dry.

Only a few of those mills remain today, which together form a pretty group along the river. Zaanse Schans is located just north of Amsterdam.

The image shows the miller redirecting his mill after a rainshower passed over.
