The South Central Farm in Los Angeles is the largest urban farm in the United States, covering 14 acres of land divided into approximately 350 plots. Founded after the Los Angeles riots of 1992, hundreds of farmers tended the land for over 10 years, feeding their families and establishing a green front in a dirty urban wasteland.
On June 13, 2006, the Los Angeles Police Department arrived early in the morning to evict the farmers after a decade and a half of toil and years of legal uncertainties. This panorama was shot in the days following the eviction, within the vigil camp setup outside the perimeter where farmers and activists have come together and maintain a presence until a final resolution has been reached and the farm is either returned to its keepers or destroyed by bulldozers making way for a new warehouse.
