Norman Peters: Unleashed - The Awakening of a Living Fossil

Behind the scene : how this panorama was made
It was with some trepidation that I approached this assignment – I had chosen to try to document the possibly rarest plant on the planet, and make sure that it would survive the past few years.

I pass my most heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, in particular to Jo Sedman from the Garden's PR and Media area, who’s sympathetic ear and efforts made this photo shoot possible, and to the gardener who accompanied me and opened up the protective cage to the rarest and most exquisite tree I have ever seen.

The panoramic sequence was shot late in the day to try and capture some of the “magic hour’s” special light. The foliage is not badly stitched - the tree was moving as it was windy, and the camera was about 30 centimetres from the nearest branch - c'est la vie...

I used a Canon EOS 10D digital body, with a Canon 15 mm full frame fisheye lens, mounted on a Manfrotto 055 tripod and a spherical VR head of my own construction.

Many thanks to the members of the international panographer's community that offered help when I ran up against seemingly insurmountable problems in this event - you know who you are.
