Water, water everywhere. Seven days ago bone dry, today nearly full. Devils Kitchen is a natural circular amphitheatre of basalt cliffs at Piggoreet through which the Woady Yaloak river flows. The "kitchen" was an ancient river valley filled by lava flows, some flows cooling slowly to form hexagonal columns. In summer the heat is contained by the cliffs leading to the feeling you really are in the "Devil's Kitchen". During the 19th century alluvial gold deposits were mined in the former stream-bed below the basalt with the remains of the mining still in evidence. Today the most spectactular residents are the Peregrine Falcons who nest in the cliffs. Devils Kitchen swimming hole - our favourite place to be when the temperature passes 40 celsius.
