The Rhine Falls, the largest Falls in Europe, offer a spectacular showpiece to visitors.

Age of the Rhine Falls: 17'000 - 14'000 years ago the cataracts developed during the latest ice-age. Characteristics of the Falls Divided by several hard rocks the Rhine Falls are a set of three falls, called the Schaffhauser Falls, the Zürcher Falls and the Mühle Falls. The borderline of the two counties Schaffhausen (right riverside) und Zürich (left riversi-de) runs through the midst of the cataracts and river. The Rhine Falls belong to the type of cataracts, which change very little by erosion.

The oldest representation: In 1544 a woodcutting, made by Sebastian Münster, was published in a paper called "Cosmographia universa-lis". It is declared as the oldest representation of the Rhine Falls.

Width of the Rhine Falls: 490 ft / 150 m

Height of the Rhine Falls: 80 ft / 25 m

Volume of flow: The average flow of water is 26'450 cubic ft/sec. In 1965 the maximum flow of water was 44'000 cubic ft/sec and in 1921 the minimum flow of water was 3350 cubic ft/sec.
