Tidal power generation The vast boundless sea approximately composes 71% of the earth's surface, has 97% of the water volume, and contains rich amounts of energy. With humanity's current rate of energy consumption, we will have to rely more and more on the sea. Mainland China's coastline is over 14,000 kilometers, the sea area more than 270,000 square kilometers, the marine energy resources is extremely rich. The moon's gravitational attraction causes tides. The moon pulls on the sea level and causes a periodic fluctuation in that level and this fluctuation is called tidal energy. The tidal power is harnessed by using the natural bay and river as a reservoir. When the tide rises the water is allowed into the reservoir and then dammed. As the tide goes back out, the water is released from the reservoir through water-turbine generators and produces electricity. China's River Mansion Tide Experiment power plant is in the north of the Chinese Zhejiang Province, near Wenling city, on the Yueqing side of Jiang Xiagang. Construction was completed in 1985 with 5 bidirectional tidal power generating units with a total installed capacity of 3,200 kilowatts. It is the third largest in the world, smaller only than a French and a Canadian tidal power plant. China's was first.
