En la década de los cuarenta se construyó el "sistema del Lerma". Esta obra acarrea por gravedad agua del valle de rio Lerma hasta la Ciudad de México que se encuentra localizada a una altura inferior por 300 metros.
El agua de este sistema llega a los "Tanques de Dolores" que son unos enormes depósitos de agua, ubicados en la segunda sección del Bosque de Chapultepec, alrededor de 50 m. sobre el nivel del centro de la ciudad.
En la cámara de ditribución del agua (también conocida como el Cárcamo de Chapultepec") el artista mexicano Diego Rivera pintó un mural conmemorativo y construyó una fuente con la figura de Tlaloc para adornar su exterior. Tlaloc representa el dios del agua y de la lluvia para varias culturas mesoamericanas.
Hoy en día, esta cámara de distribución se encuentra en desuso. A pesar de que los murales fueron restaurados recientemente para su exhibición se encuentran abandonados.
Since its foundation, Mexico City has had a severe potable water problem. Every time we have to bring water from farther places.
On the decade of the forties the "Sistema Lerma" was built. This system carries water from the valley of Rio Lerma to Mexico City by gravity (Mexico City is located about 300 m below this valley).
The water from this system arrives to a series of huge storage tanks called "Tanques de Dolores" that are places on the second section of Chapultepec forest, about 50m above Mexico City´s historical center.
On the water distribution chamber (a.k.a. the "Carcamo de Chapultepec") the mexican artist Diego Rivera made a Huge mural painting and a fountain shaped like Tlaloc, the aztec and mesoamerican god of water.
Today, this distribution chamber is no longer used. The mural was recently restored, but is not open to the public and the fountain is almost abandoned.
