Coptic Cairo is the oldest part of modern-day Cairo. A tightly walled enclave, its narrow alley-ways leads to Churches dating back to the origins of Christianity in Egypt.
The Hanging Church ('Al-Muallaqa' in Arabic meaning The Suspended) was built on top of the Water Gate of Roman Babylon. The 9th century church is well renovated and is still used for Coptic Mass on Friday and Sunday. At the baptistery on the right of the entrance, a panel has been cut out of the floor through which you can look down on the Water Gate below.
Other than the Hanging Church, it includes the Coptic Museum, Monastery & Church of St George, Convent of St George, Churches of St Sergius & St Barbara, a pair of Roman towers and Ben Ezra Synagogue (Egypt's oldest synagogue). Coptic Cairo is not listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage.
