In Switzerland 60% of the electric power is produced by water-power plants. Of a total of 543 installed water power plants 47% are run-of-river power stations, 49% are storage-power-stations and 4% are pump-storage-power-stations.

To get as much water as possible to the "Gösgen run-of-river power station," the water in the Aare river is limited to the minimum by the retaining dam.
