Train stations throughout greater Tokyo are undergoing renovation and often expanding to include stores, such as the ecute chain shown here, inside Tachikawa Station (立川駅). Travelers appreciate not having to leave the station, thus being charged, to eat, shop, read, or dawdle on their way to/from somewhere.

I've been told that businesses inside train stations receive preferential tax treatment, but I have not confirmed this.
