I arrived unannounced at this little boatyard with my somewhat unusual pack of photographic equipment. I was given a really warm welcome from the curious sailors doing the final preparation of their yachts before they are craned into the water for the summer season.

I have been involved with a number of people who are interested in boats, usually exchanging my ability to get unusual pictures from a kite with an afternoon in the waters around Edinburgh photographing yachts from above.

The folks of Blackness appear no different to other seafarers I have met, a small band, held together by a love of sailing. Each bringing different abilities and skills to the group, and through these differences, being the stronger and better community.

After taking the picture, we talked in the yard about their pastime, and mine. We talked about the weather and we talked about the wind speed and direction, and we found that despite our different interests we had something in common.

Equipment:
Nikon 8400 with FC-E9 Lens. Homemade camera cradle/rig, triggered by a gentLED intervalometer. Suspended below a Dan Leigh Cruiser R8 kite with 10ft/3m span.

This technique produces two hemispheres, and a different workflow in PTGui from the classic ground pano technique. This results in lower resolution BUT impossible angles!

See the rig, how Kite Aerial Photography is achieved, and the workflow.
