Seeing a baby turn one year old used to be a critical sign of health. Though modern medicine has stunted mortality rates, the Polynesian tradition of a big first birthday party still has a hold in Hawaii. Hundreds of guests and professional entertainment commonly make up a celebration for one member of the generation that's just beginning. In the panorama the birthday boy, Rayden (toward the back in the red shirt and M&M bib) looks on over young friends and family at a magic show on stage. The adults, still at their dining tables, are just as mesmerized as the children.
