The most famous peak in Arizona, Pichaco Peak, between Phoenix and Tucson, is a volcanic plug. The delicate balance of nature in sustaining the growth of the various desert flora and fauna such as the saguaro cactus visible here is at the mercy of the atmosphere's future fate. Shifts of rainfall or temperature would wipe out much of the interesting life that is often just clinging to its meager desert existance.
