This image is not as poetic as it looks at first glance! It is also not the panorama I was planning to do for this occasion. Unfortunately the weather has been very uncooperative [not unusual for this time of year in Toronto—it was 1˚C very windy and raining] .
The Eaton Centre is one of a few, rare spaces in downtown Toronto that offers some atmosphere, some people interaction and some urban life. The Centre is two full city blocks long, and is one of Canada's best retail shopping destinations. The first stage of the project opened in 1977 and the second in 1979.
Zigzagging around historical sites, such as Old City Hall and Holy Trinity Church, the Eaton Centre has indeed woven itself into the urban fabric. In winter months, together with a whole network of interconnecting underground spaces, the 10-kilometer labyrinth of pathways linking office buildings, hotels, entertainment and shopping, also serves as a social space with a pleasant atmosphere, protected from the elements. Even though it is more comfortable than any other shopping mall in the city, it is not as poetic as some other public spaces in Toronto. It lacks visible heritage connections as well as a better link with the surrounding outside space.
