This location immediately came to mind when Marketplace was announced as the theme for this March 2005 World Wide Panorama event. The Lancaster Central Market, or just "Market" as it is known locally, has been in continuous operation since the 1730's. It is advertised as the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in the USA. I am not sure if that is factual or just said to promote local tourism, but it is certain that this market has been a vital community institution for nearly 300 years.
While Lancaster Central Market has been housed in the same elegant building since 1889, the variety of goods offered and merchants represented has been expanding steadily over the years. Pennsylvania Dutch (more accurately Pennsylvania German) farmers selling locally grown produce, meats, and cheeses are still well represented, but they are now complemented by a wider variety of ethnic foods that reflect the growing diversity of the local community. Crafts, flowers and other items are also offered for sale by the "standholders" who rent space in this city-owned facility.
Additional information about Lancaster Central Market can be found here.
