The main street in most small towns and cities was once the hub of commerce and the heart of the town. As supermarkets, shopping malls, and chain mega-department stores opened out in the suburbs, many local stores were forced out of business and the downtown areas fell into disrepair.

Though its signature sign remains, the Oneonta Department Store closed its doors in 1994, after being in business for over 100 years. A furniture store now fills the premises, however, and most of the other store fronts along the street are occupied and active, maintaining a vibrant downtown in this small city.
