Important, but ashamed part of the national cultural heritage are medieval castles. Most were destroyed and vanished in big earthquake in 16th century, many burned between or just after the 2nd WW. The area of Slovenia was situated on the frontline against the Ottoman Empire. Most of Europe was in safe place, fighting between each other but still with extra »energy« to build cathedrals and mighty castles. Slovenia was place with the world highest density of castles and churches, turned in defense fortresses for peasants; most of the energy to defend the entire Europe was from local people, no time to build mighty buildings.
