(EN) The 32-metre (105-ft) high Rostral Columns which stand on the edge of the Spit of Vasilievsky Island were built between 1805–10. Their name is derived from the word "rostrum", which is Latin for ship's prow. The Romans used to decorate their triumphal columns with war trophies, including the sawn-off prows of Carthaginian ships. Here, in similar tradition, mock prows decorate the columns in commemoration of various Russian naval victories.

In the dark months, the triumphal columns doubled as lighthouses. After sunset, giant oil lamps on top of each column were lit to guide ships into port. These were later replaced by gas lights. The 7-metre (23-ft) high flaming beacons are still lit on public holidays.

Today, on January 27 the city celebrates the Anniversary of the End of the Siege of Leningrad.

(RU) Ростральные колонны на стрелке Васильевского острова были возведены в 1810 году по проекту французского архитектора Тома де Томона, который украсил их рострами кораблей. Это образно показывает мощь и величие Российского флота и отсылает к древнеримскому обычаю украшать колонны рострами (лат. rostra, множественное число от лат. rostrum, нос корабля) поверженных вражеских кораблей.

В XIX веке колонны выполняли функцию маяков. Внутри каждой колонны находится винтовая лестница, ведущая на верхнюю смотровую площадку с огромной чашей-светильником и металлической треногой, удерживающей её. В чашу заливали конопляное масло, дающее огромный огненный столб, указывающий путь кораблям. Маяки зажигались ночью и в туман, и служили до 1885 года. В 1957 году маяки стали освещать с помощью газа из соображений экономии. В наши дни факелы на Ростральных колоннах зажигают только по особым торжественным случаям.

Сегодня, 27 января город отмечает годовщину снятия блокады.
