In the United Kingdom alone, 8 million trees are used annually as Christmas Decorations. Most, like at this farm retailer, are cut. Some are potted and others are artificial.

This market may be a significant, specialised, sector of forestry but is it green? These trees are grown in special plantations where each tree has enough space to develop a good shape, and increasingly they are recycled (250 tonnes of them!) after the holiday period so the process is a natural one. Potted trees can fail to root when planted in January, and where do you plant it anyway? Plastic trees take considerable energy and hydro-carbons to manufacture, but can be reused for many years.

The debate continues!
