Marischal College in Aberdeen was founded in 1593 by the 4th Earl Marischal and was the second university in the city following the foundation of King's College in 1495. The two universities were united in 1860 as the University of Aberdeen. The building is the second largest granite building in the world. Marischal College has now been extensively renovated and on 21 June, 2011, the building became the corporate headquarters of Aberdeen City Council. In May, 2011, a new statue of Robert the Bruce was unveiled outside Marischal College to recognise the debt owed to King Robert the Bruce as a benefactor to the City of Aberdeen.
