The Carmen Virgin's Sea procession at A Illa de Arousa.

Festivals in honour of the Carmen Virgin, the catholic protector of all seamen, may be found anywhere along the Spanish coastline. In A Illa de Arousa the sea procession has been celebrated since the late 1940s. It is the biggest one in all the Arousa's firth, as more than 100 ships take part in it.

It all begins when the Virgin's image is got out of its usual home—St. Julian's Church—to be taken to the Xufre harbour—the biggest one of the the two harbours in the A Illa isle. There a solemn mass is celebrated, and then the Virgin's image is embarked to the current year's fortunate and decorated ship. Anyone wishing to follow the sea procession, as myself, is allowed in many of the other participating boats.

At a certain spot all the ships stop and a flower bouquet is offered in silent respect to the sea. Then the procession follows on to the other isle's harbour from where the Virgin's image is taken back to its yearly usual home.

At night a dance and fireworks are held at the Plaza do Regueiro square.
