Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal. Built around 1800 by the British as the residence for the Viceroy of India it has a covered area of 84,000 sq. ft. on 27 acres of landscaped gardens, making it one of the largest official residences in the world. The magnificent Throne Room is where Governors are sworn in and has antique chandeliers, carpets and furniture while the walls are adorned with paintings of Indian leaders Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and Indira Gandhi.
