In 2009 I traveled to Tehran, Iran for my friend Ahmet's funeral. We shared 18 years of friendship together with great memories in Istanbul. Ahmet moved to Tehran a few years ago. His profession was in company management. But, with his intelligence, sharp perception, and open-minded thoughts he was more like a life guide for everybody around him. He lived a very modest life without of any labels. He had a full sense of humor, deep compassion, and empathy for all.

He lived by carrying out the words of the philosopher Socrates: "Overcome yourself, not the world"...

The kitchen was his favorite place to spend time. It was a ritual for him to sit at the kitchen table with friends (with a cup of tea) while having a long, warm, heart to heart chat.

I will always remember how I was warmly welcomed by his kind family and friends during my visit to Tehran. To cherish Ahmet's memory, we sit at his kitchen table and talked about our favorite memories of Ahmet with his picture sitting on the table. His brother Hamid, his son Aydin, his friend Ali, and myself are pictured in the panorama.

"Mellos, your place is empty." Rest in peace. (1945-2009)
