This panorama represents a project—and a promise—that came full circle at the turn of the year. Our friends Liz and Robert host a fantastic meal and party every New Year's Eve, and in the hazy morning-after glow at the start of 2008 I rashly offered to help out with their project to turn a derelict outbuilding into a holiday cottage. As a result I spent two days in bitter March winds in an unglazed, unheated building hauling my arthritic body up and down a ladder to the first floor (the stairs went in the day after I left) in order to tile the bathroom.

Be careful what you promise on the First of January...

(2008 turned out to be a big year in more ways than one - our virtual tours, for which Liz designed the interface, won a prestigious national accessibility award.)

The up-side was that, while the other New Year's Eve guests started 2009 in the relative cool of the main house, I was snug with my partner in the now handsomely appointed Gig House. William Randolph Hearst hardly offered better guest accommodation at San Simeon. And the bathroom tiling is beautiful...
