More than 200,000 people gathered on the avenue, "Straße des 17. Juni," in Berlin, leading from the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Column, to hear Barack Obama's speech. This was reported to have harmed his campaign in the US but it helped a lot to create understanding in Europe.
