This is the porch at the ‘Big House,’ Hickory Nut Gap Farm, in Fairview, North Carolina. Ever since I lived here as a teenager I've loved this place, and I always wanted to capture the feeling of tranquility that this view gives me. Even living for decades in London hasn't dimmed the memory. I have an old photo of this that I took when I was 18, and now, over twenty six years later, this panorama shows that the view and the porch itself, and the feeling too, remains the same.
This is looking roughly north by north-west from near the Hickory Nut Gap pass, back down towards Fairview and the Blue Ridge mountains, late one Monday morning in October, just hours before I flew back to London.
