I saw this field when driving along the nearby M1 on the way to a meeting; after making a mental note of where it was I returned on the way home.

I had to cross several fields to get to this poppy-adorned spot, at the crest of a hill which swept lazily down towards the motorway. I’ve never seen so many poppies before: I couldn’t help be reminded of Lt. Col. John McCrae’s poem about Flanders Fields as thousands of red flowers swayed under the glowering sky.

In the distance one can view the splendour of Hardwick Hall, home of Bess of Hardwick, who at one stage was the most powerful woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I herself.
