The Millennium Bridge is a 325 m long steel lateral suspension bridge linking the City of London at St Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery at Bankside in central London. The bridge was opened on 10 June 2000 and is the first pedestrian river crossing over the River Thames in central London for more than a century. Within days of opening to the public, the bridge was nicknamed the Wobbly Bridge after pedestrians felt an unexpected swaying motion. The bridge was closed and passive damping was introduced to reduce the oscillations caused by walking pedestrians. To many Londoners the bridge is still known as the Wobbly Bridge.
