In the Netherlands you can find more than 50 'hunebedden'. These megalithic monuments form the remains of ancient burial chambers. Their age is about 5400 years, older than the pyramids of Egypt! Most hunebedden are situated in the eastern part of the district of Drenthe, near the German border. There used to be a huge swamp and the hunebedden were built on higher grounds. The huge granite stones (some of them weighing over 20 tons!) were transported from Scandinavia to Holland by ice-glaciers, during the last ice-age, some 20,000 years ago. People from the Funnel Beaker Culture actually built the hunebedden. In 1927 professor van Giffen restored and numbered the hunebedden. This particular hunebed (number D50) is one of the most beautifull hunebedden because it is a big and quite complete one. D50 has 8 capstones and a wonderful ring of 24 big kerbstones surrounding the actual burial chamber. Hunebedden with a ring of kerbstones are pretty rare. Nearby hunebed D51 can be found.
