Children of Karan

My second day in Mali with MSF (Doctors without Borders) to document their Malaria programme. With some 3,000 deaths per day, malaria is the number one killer of children in Africa, accounting for almost as many victims per annum as the AIDS death total in the last 15 years. Still malaria is hardly recognised as a disaster in developed countries.

I had no idea what to expect visually, even after the briefing in Bamako, or the documentation I gathered before my leave.

These children of Karan were on their way home from school, I thought. But no, the school is closed because an NGO (non-governmental organization) has stopped funding education and there won't be free notebooks and pencils this year. Today the kids came down to the village for market day in the hope that the school would have reopened, but it has not. The waiting will be prolonged until the supplies are made available and they can pay for it.
