Neutral Ground - Most cities call them medians. About two hundred years ago the US designated the median on Canal Street as a 'Neutral Ground' (a sort of sanctuary) where French & Spanish Catholic Creoles and American Protestant could meet in peace and conduct business. The Creoles mostly lived on the downriver side of Canal and the Americans on the upriver side of Canal Street. Over time, we locals started calling all street medians neutral grounds. This one happens to also be a neighborhood bird sanctuary. New Orleans itself is a sanctuary from the sea in that it is a port with a protected harbor. We are also a sanctuary from progress in many ways.
