A sanctuary of modern ages.

The one thing man has always sought for is peace of mind. The modern man has everything he could think of, but is still lost with himself. Some commit to seeking, like the brothers of Pokrova monastery in Kirkkonummi, Finland.

The brothers are modern men with an ancient task of getting closer to their God. The private monastery was founded only a few years back and the consecration of the Pokrova Church took place on 17th of June 2001. This was a special event, since Orthodox churches are very rare in Lutheran Finland.

Even though the church is new, the building itself has a history. It used to give shelter to horses and at one time served as a bakery. The transformation from a stable into a sanctuary required a lot of work from both the brothers and voluntary workers. Eventually, a group of 20 painters from St. Petersburg attended to do the ornamental and decorative pantings on the walls.

The greatest visionary all along has been Father Hariton, who used to be a restauranteur in Helsinki. He took a turn in his life, started a new path and became the founder of the Pokrova monastery. No wonder the visitors are greeted with versatile menus and food made with great care!

The Pokrova Church now serves both the brotherhood and the general public as a place for services. But at the same time it is a sanctuary of modern days, a shelter from the pressures of life.
