This is the chancel of Zoodohos Pigi temple at Peania, 15miles east of Athens (built 1902-1905).Hagiography in this church was made by one of the most famous European artists in this field, Fotis Kontoglou* (1895-1965).
Actual hagiography commenced in 1939. Some of the artist's most valued pieces can be found today in this church, such as, Genesis, Vaptisis, Ypapanti, or else 'Ton Ouranon i Platytera'.
*Born in Aivali, in Asia Minor and as an hagiographer & Orthodox Iconographer he dedicated his life to protect this iconographic tradition from the Byzantines, but mostly he fought for the eternal values of the Orthodoxy and the Greek Tradition ,gaining the Cross of the Commander of the Phoenix as well as a prize from the Academy of Athens. Using the same technique a great number of churches have been painted by him throughout Greece, Europe, America & Egypt. His work is full of wall illustrations,lithographic paintings, micrography, wood art, frescos, books etc. and his overall work is defined to belong in Romanticism. He has also painted non-religious works always within the Byzantine technique that he excelled into. He died in 1965 leaving a great work both in painting & literature.
